“The fact is tha’ they always go after yer weakest point – th’ way wolves chase down th’ weakest sheep in th’ herd.”

William eyed the man speculatively, noting the truth in his words but not entirely sure what additional meaning they may be attempting to convey. Adjusting his spectacles and straightening his vest, his response comes in his usual posh drone to mask any grim emotion the statement might have dredged up.

“That’s why it is no doubt best to keep any sensitivities well hidden. The wolves, so to speak, can’t take advantage of a pressure point if there are none to find.”

“Ah, but tha’s th’ trouble wi’ it,” Eric’s voice was low and rough, as if the great resonance of his words had worn it down. “There’s no man on Earth tha’ hasn’ go’ a point worth exploitin’, nor a man without enemies tha’ ‘ave th’ resolve tae uncover them.” He paused a beat, expression solemn. “Even wolves can become sheep, an’ even sheep can masquerade as wolves.”
