After reading through this lovely blog and getting a chance to read through the Japanese version of Grell’s Confessional, I feel that it is necessary to revisit this discussion. They offer proof that I, myself, foolishly overlooked. Having read more about Japanese pronouns (and realizing that these are things I should have remembered, given that I often use “おれ” when referring to myself in Japanese), I feel that Grell’s gender is up for interpretation. 

Why? 

In Japan, it’s common for people to be confused about the difference between homosexual and transgender folks. And with the additional information about the use of female pronouns among gay men, I feel that I can now change my stance with confidence. 

I feel that Grell’s gender is up for interpretation, given that the Japanese material is incredibly hard to directly translate to English. Reading it myself, there’s not a clear distinction of gender - especially when I consider how the use of pronouns has changed in Japan over time. It’s not as simple as he, she or ze. 

Of course. I also feel the need to point out that I never, ever, ever discriminate because of someone’s interpretation of Grell’s gender. No matter who you are, if you’re writing Grell for fun, you have every right to use Grell the way you want. I think we should all respect each other and treat all Grells equally, regardless of sex, gender or sexuality. Likewise, if someone wants to rp Grell as a raging hipposexual, do it. You have every right.
